Our History
The club motto of Ealing Rugby is 'Respice Prospice’, which means 'Learn from the past and look to the future.'
Ealing Football Club (Rugby Union) played its first match in 1869 on Ealing Common, prior to the founding of the RFU in 1871.
Between 1894 and 1958 The Club moved location numerous times: Hanger Lane – West Middlesex Polo Club – Gunnersbury Park – Drayton Green – Syon Lane – Horsenden Hill. The latest move was in 1999 when The Club relocated to the Trailfinders Sports and Social Club, previously the Great Western Railway club, at Vallis Way. This move came soon after the advent of professional rugby in England in 1995 and precipitated the transformation of The Club from amateur rugby to its current blend of amateur and professional rugby for men and women of all ages.
The rich and varied history of Ealing Rugby was captured in the book Flair and Fire which was authored by Dick Tyson in 2009.
In 2020 The Club launched an ambitious project to capture its history in a digital archive. This project will take many years to complete and will capture in detail current and future events whilst also delving into over 150 years of history to ensure that our rich collection of historic documents, trophies, caps, artefacts, photographs, and videos are preserved and documented for the generations to come.
